Help the ex-Borland Memorabilia Auction for Haiti Relief

At Embarcadero, we're collecting unique and one-of-a-kind Borland memorabilia to auction to the developer community for Haiti earthquake relief. Embarcadero employees have donated several hundred items from their personal collections ranging from 1st Ship product boxes, to Borland Leather Jackets, to Borland surfboards. We're currently organizing the auction and plan to launch next week but there is always room for more stuff if it will bring more donations for Haiti relief, particularly unique and "early years" items.

If you're an ex-Borlander like us and you are local to the Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley area and would like to donate any Borland memorabilia to the auction, you may drop off at our drop box in the Scotts Valley Embarcadero campus main lobby (former Borland HQ campus). We will be checking the drop box daily.

IT's Challenge: Systemwide Optimization or Bust

Empowered with the right tools, IT can optimize application and database performance.

by Greg Nerpouni

The development of database-backed applications continues to accelerate despite shrinking IT budgets, and the distinct separation of duties between database professionals and application developers continues to blur. With DBAs becoming more focused on meeting production service level agreements (SLAs), application developers — who are fluent in languages such as Java and C++, but admittedly not in SQL — are being forced to pick up the slack and write their own SQL.

It's All About Who Controls The Information | Foretelling in Sneakers

I admit it,  every morning and I try to think of new ways to get people to want to download, try and/or buy database tools and developer software.  For the first time in my life I am having fun with this, I really am.  While looking for some videos to create a promotional spot I came across one of the best scenes (to me) in a movie that was very…well, poignant for the current times.  Even back in 1992, whoever wrote this script, they knew their stuff….

The world isn’t run by weapons anymore, or energy or money.
It’s run by ones and zeroes, little bits of data. It’s all just electrons.
There’s a war out there, old friend, a world war.
And it’s not about who’s got the most bullets.

It’s about who controls the information:

…what we see and hear, how we work, what we think.

It’s all about the information.

Though according to IMBD the film was written by Phil Alden Robinson, Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes.

What’s New in Change Manager 5.1

Header Webinar Event

TECHNICAL WEBINAR

How do you track and report on changes throughout your database environment? Roll out application updates? Comply with database audit and reporting requirements or protect data privacy? Or the real kicker… database performance tanked and it’s because someone tweaked the schema in Production and now YOU have to search through schema archives to find the problem and roll it back… ASAP.

The Smart Way To Manage Database Changes

Please join us for a live webinar event, What’s New in Change Manager 5.1, and find out how to automatically capture schema “snapshots” to quickly identify changes and correct problems in less time; compare live databases or archives to track and report on change; generate change scripts; compare, validate and synchronize schema and data within or across database platforms; and monitor database settings to ensure compliance with regulations and company policies.

And NEW in Change Manager® 5.1, you can:

  • Protect Data Privacy – Data masking  features shuffle or randomize columns to de-identify data and then quickly migrate the masked data from Production into Test, QA or Dev environments
  • Migrate schemas and manage change across DBMS environments – cross-DBMS schema compare and synch between Oracle <> SQL Server and Sybase ASE <> SQL Server
  • Go Global – with full Unicode character support

Embarcadero Change Manager is the only change management tool that covers data, schema, and configuration management, and supports four major DBMS platforms (IBM® DB2® for LUW, Microsoft® SQL Server, Oracle®, and Sybase®) – all from a single interface.

Universal Data Models and Patterns

Universal Data Models are standard and industry data model templates for ER/Studio that reduce development time and facilitate standardization.

<

Find out more about ER/Studio at Embarcadero Technologies, a database tools and devleoper software company website.  According to Webster’s, the term universal can be defined as “generally applicable” as well as “applying to the whole.” There are some very common patterns that can be generally applied in data models to develop higher quality and more holistic designs. Additionally, reusing patterns can save time and effort by providing model structures that have been proven to work well, flexible alternatives that can handle additional future needs and consistent models and structures that facilitate data sharing.
